Art and Design

Supporting Working Groups though creative projects, using graphic design and illustration to create flyers, educational handouts, promotional pieces, directories, reports, power point presentations, and banners and web content as well as building props and sets and assembling costumes for political theater. Also featuring one of a kind artistic signs, stencils, stickers and bringing color and beauty, drama, intensity, and/or silliness to the movement whenever possible. If you would like to invite Art and Design to join with you on a project, please leave a message on this page. Our print designs are generally available at Walkers Office Supply, 791 Maltman Drive in Grass Valley. Designs are stored in a job folder named “Occupy Nevada County” and anyone may print them out.

Please participate in the Art and Design Forum.

Art and Design WG doesn’t have regular meetings like other groups. Our work is more open-ended, fluid, and right-brained. So anyone who is interested and wants to participate and support in any way needs to go to the forum and be part of planning and scheduling. Please click on “subscribe forum” in order to be notified of activity on the forum. Feel free to be proactive about planning projects and work days. And please feel free to bring new participants into the group. Thanks! xo

4th of July Parade - Educate & Entertain Public About Corporate Personhood!

Nevada County Move to Amend Local Coalition is in the planning stages for OUR ENTRY IN THE 4TH OF JULY PARADE which is in Nevada City this year!

Our planning meetings are Tuesdays 6/12, 6/26, 5:00 at the Peace Center.

We will have two “corporate persons” leading the way. (This idea was pulled from the MTA website which has the basic instructions for constructing a “corporate person” which is essentially a walking building with corporate logo on top. Seph is leading this working group.) Very cool. We envision Dale or another actor in top hat MC style outfit informing the audience “Corporations aren’t people! Then pointing to the group following “these are people!” Next, following the corporate persons will be our dancing and singing contingent with Amous Lou leading (hopefully) and at least 6-8 dancers, then other folks who don’t want to dance, walking & singing the Corporatocracy Song and passing out our new MTA Local Coalition “Occucards” being printed now. It is our hope to have the song recorded (by us) and amplified on some kind of rolling construct so the audience will be able to hear the core message throughout the parade walk. We welcome more ideas!

What do you say? Are you in? If you can’t make it to the meetings (and reheasrsals to be announced) but intend to participate, let us know by contacting Lorraine, Sharon or Leah and we’ll count you in and give you details about our entry number, what to wear and where to meet on the Big Day!

May 1 Global General Strike and Day of Action!

We’re taking a road trip to San Francisco to participate in the global day of action on May 1. Please join us!

If you’d like to learn the details and how to get involved, please check out the recent post in the art and design forum. We’d love to have you, in fact we need to recruit more people.

We’ll be bringing our gorgeous large art objects, “We’re all in the same boat” and the giant love puppet.

There are many actions planned for this exciting day. We plan to be at Montgomery and Market at 12 noon for a people’s festival in the street.

On the Horizon for Art and Design WG

We have an urgent need for props by Wednesday March 21 for the foreclosure “scene of the crime” rally. Please check the forum to plan a date to get together and get this done.

We will be painting a backdrop for the ONC TV show. Brainstorming and discussion has begun. Let’s get together and get this started. Please go to the forum topic to plan a date.

A couple of Art and Design WG members went to the regional gathering in Chico, where Occupy activists from throughout our area met for purposes of networking and collaboration. This is the first of what will be quarterly regional meetings.

Occupy Chico would love for us to participate in an upcoming pioneer day parade on May 5. We told them about our Mardi Gras float and they were excited about the possibility of the boat and puppet making an appearance.

There is an endangered species fair on the same day, and we talked about bringing our earth day installation.

We will be creating an Earth Day interactive art installation for use at Earth Day events at Grass Valley Sierra College (April 18), Roseville Sierra College (April 19), and Briarpatch (April 21), and at the endangered species fair in Chico (May 5). We will be meeting soon to plan and begin the process of creating this installation.

We are also exploring the possibilities around a collaborative mandala project to be done as a guerrilla public art piece using natural materials over the course of several hours with public participation.

We will begin meeting regularly to do shadow puppetry with regular meetings twice a month, more as needed. The first meeting is planned for April 4.

Please participate in the forum on this website for planning work parties, brainstorming, sourcing materials etc. Please adjust your settings so you receive email notifications when people post.

Women's Day Participatory Art Event March 8 in Nevada City

Plans are evolving for this event, and this description is a proposal, free to be discussed, amended, and added to. So far, the plan is:

We meet in Nevada City at 1pm. Let’s say Robinson Plaza.

Libby is bringing hula hoops! I will bring face paint and sidewalk chalk. Ooo- and bubbles.

We bring some art objects, but we keep it simple and portable. I am thinking maybe we can attach the puppet head to Portia’s wagon? Decorated nicely around the edges, of course. Other wheeled contraptions? I have my little two wheel bucket-cart, which works great. Maybe some of our gear could be wheeled on a bike with bike bags?

Among our decor are signage. I have one I’m making that says “Compassion is revolutionary”. Let’s brainstorm about other messages. The idea is to connect with local women, rather than make demands of a faceless edifice (system). But as part of that, let’s not neglect real issues, and let’s keep in mind the corporate-government domination that Occupy is resisting. Let your inspiration be your guide.

We carry cards to hand to women. Greeting cards with messages of thanks, affirmation…. Portia is writing. Nice art on the front. Thinking about that. I will post some ideas for card art in the forum, and other people do the same, please. I think it would be nice if we used a piece of locally created art and I think we should make the cards with photocopy. Cards featuring individual art pieces (stamps, stencils) would be super cool, but too much to take on at this time.

At the event, we create a work of art together, a line of prayer flags. By “we” I mean any women who want to join in. I think it should be women, so we can create something that is expressing women’s voices. Yes? Of course men may do art with us, that would be great. But maybe only the women’s flags get strung on the rope into the big composite art piece. The flags will express women’s messages to be brought to protests and gatherings.

A few of us are planning to get together on Tuesday to cut out and hem the prayer flags. If you want to be part of that, send a message in the forum. I’m looking into what kind of ink or fabric paint would work best for the flags. Does anyone have experience with this? I’m thinking we can use big drawing boards, the kinds with clips on them, for doing the actual painting. I’ll figure out a portable handy paint holder.

We can walk through the town handing out the cards, maybe playing music and singing (bring lyric sheets!), we can stop and talk, we can stop and sit and make prayer flags. We can set up a little station and hang out somewhere.

Other ideas? Thoughts? This is all in process will be what we make it. Fun it will be, that I know. ♥

Invite friends who would like to participate in co-creating.

Pilobolus Shadow Art

Mardi Gras Parade in Nevada City

Thank you to everyone who came out to help build the Mardi Gras float and to those who participated in the parade. The theme was “We’re all in the same boat” and the feeling was inclusive and fun. Everyone did great work and created something beautiful together.
