Kids and Families

A place for families to find connection and support within the Occupy activist community.

Can we build a support structure for parent/activists?

I created this group because I was hoping we could find ways to support, well, generally speaking, the moms among us. On the old site, I made a few posts and invited people to share an inventory of needs and resources, but no one really responded. I think it’s hard to know how to support one another in this culture where the structure has been designed to keep us isolated. As mothers, we need support in very basic ways. There is just too much to do and it always feels as if something (or someone) is being neglected. Because we are generous and compassionate toward others, often that neglect is turned inwardly. As activists, we are giving ourselves permission to be involved in the world. We are acting upon our passions, coming out of our shells, out of our domestic sphere, and this puts pressure on our families. Someone has to pick up the slack. This is not a bad thing. I think my kids may be learning to take more responsibility for meeting their own needs and that’s ok. But it can be stressful. There are many parents who are not part of our activist community because they don’t see a way to have time, energy and other resources to become involved. Can we build a support structure for parent/activists? Where do we start? Ideas?
